General Discussion / Hong Kong's year in seven intense emotions
« on: December 29, 2019, 12:43:05 am »
Nobody saw it coming. Hong Kong's year of protest and violence stunned everyone from observers to participants. What started the crisis was political - but emotion has fuelled it.

We picked seven to explain this year of tears, exhilaration, broken relationships and personal pride. Text by the BBC's Grace Tsoi, portrait photographs by Curtis Lo Kwan Long.

Saturday 30 March 2019 was the last normal day. Clear and sunny, it began like any other weekend in Hong Kong with its singular cocktail of frenetic leisure - family lunches, shopping late into the neon-lit night and cute selfies at every opportunity.

The next day, something more political began. A few thousand people marched through a dispiriting drizzle to protest against a proposal that would have allowed extradition to China: "With extradition to the mainland, Hong Kong becomes a dark prison," they chanted.
แทงบอล2020
It didn't get much coverage then. But the city was listening.

Within six months, Hong Kong was a place of huge protest marches, street battles and an unapologetic police response of tear gas, rubber bullets, water cannon and live fire. Teenagers shot bows and arrows, the parliament chamber was vandalised, hundreds of young people now know how to make Molotov cocktails and start fires. But after the bill was withdrawn, the anger became more palpable if anything.
เว็บพนันบอลดีที่สุด2020
Politics may have been the trigger, but reckless passion is the fuel and on display everywhere. Arguments have broken out on the street between strangers: one man was set on fire while arguing with anti-government protesters; a taxi driver full of rage ran his car through a group of protesters; a student fell to his death in unexplained circumstances; an elderly cleaner standing in the middle of the road gaping at a fight was hit by a stray brick careening through the air. He died.

It is a difficult thing to report dispassionately on the descent of your home, a city famous for stability, into a surreal dystopian vision. People are worried about China's domination but they are also worried about what violence has done to the fabric of society. It seems as if nobody is sleeping well any more.
12BET
The textbook factors of politics, economics, demographics, even democratic ideals, ideology and identity cannot fully explain this - but the emotional intensity generated by the interplay of it all completes the picture.

Even though the politics divides, the emotions are what the city shares - and these stories have helped me understand Hong Kong's fraught predicament.

When Fiona met her husband at school, she knew she would marry him one day. Now, in their late 30s, they have a picture-perfect family with two children. But this is the year everything changed.

She is a protester. He is a policeman.

"I tell him I feel less love for him," Fiona says.

They didn't discuss politics when they were dating - there was little politics to discuss then.

It was only during the 2014 Occupy movement, which sought changes to Hong Kong's electoral system, that political differences emerged. She left home for the protest zone one month after she gave birth to their son, but felt wounded by the scorn of her husband.

Despite that, she believed that love could bridge any differences. That's not the case any more and the turning point for her - as for many others in Hong Kong - came on 21 July.

That night had seen protests erupt across the city. But as people headed home late in the evening another element entered the fray. In the rural district of Yuen Long, a large group of white-clad pro-government men, rumoured to be linked to triad gangs and armed with rods and poles, were waiting at the train station. They began beating people they believed to be protesters.

"I rushed out from the toilet with my phone in my hand. I told him the white shirts were beating up ordinary citizens in Yuen Long. He said he knew and went into the bedroom. He slept soundly that night, while I stayed wide awake."

Former White House press secretary Sarah Sanders late Thursday mocked former Vice President Joe Biden for accentuating a stutter in his response to a question at the sixth 2020 Democratic presidential debate.
UFA700
Toward the end of the debate in Los Angeles, Sanders mocked Biden on Twitter by caricaturing the stutter he used in responding to a question about whether, in the spirit of the holidays, there was a candidate on stage whom the others would ask for forgiveness or give a gift.

"I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I hhhave absolutely no idea what Biden is talking about. #DemDebate," Sanders tweeted.

In his answer on stage, Biden said Sen. Elizabeth Warren of Massachusetts, who had just emphasized her personal contact with thousands of voters when taking selfies with them on the campaign trail, was not the only person who snapped photos with voters.

The former vice president said he's done "thousands of them," adding that people often "lay out their problems," such as telling Biden — who lost his first wife and their infant daughter in a car accident nearly 50 years ago to the day and his eldest son to brain cancer in 2015 — about how they've lost a family member or asking him whether they're going to be OK.

Biden said that he and his wife, Jill Biden, have a list of people whom they call weekly or monthly.

"I tell them I'm here. I give them my private phone number. They keep in touch with me. A little kid who says, 'I, I, I, I, I can't talk. What do I do?'" said Biden, who has spoken recently about how he's dealt with a history of stuttering.

Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison has apologised for causing "great anxiety" by going on holiday during a mounting wildfire crisis.

Mr Morrison cut short his trip to Hawaii as criticism of him increased.
เว็บแทงบอลที่ดีที่สุด
One person was found dead on Saturday, and wildfires are raging in three states.

Since September, Australia's bushfire emergency has killed at least nine people, destroyed more than 700 homes and scorched millions of hectares.

Sydney protesters demand action on climate change
How climate change has contributed to bushfires
Australia's long and dangerous summer ahead
Earlier, deputy prime minister Michael McCormack conceded that more had to be done to tackle global warming, after many Australians linked the severity of this year's fires to climate change.

What did PM Morrison say? เว็บแทงบอล
"I get it that people would have been upset to know that I was holidaying with my family while their families were under great stress," he said on Sunday.

Speaking after a briefing with fire officials, he said he knew Australians were anxious about the fires but insisted that the emergency response was "the best in the world".

He conceded that climate change was contributing to changing weather patterns, but denied that it had directly caused Australia's wildfires.
คาสิโนออนไลน์
"It's not a credible suggestion to make that link," he argued.

Many Australians have accused Scott Morrison's government of inaction on global warming, with criticism growing as a heatwave broke records across the country and worsened the fires.

Although climate change is not the direct cause of bushfires, scientists have long warned that a hotter, drier climate would contribute to Australia's fires becoming more frequent and intense.

Firefighters' union leader Leighton Drury previously said Australia was "seeing an absolute lack of leadership from this government, and it is a disgrace".

Tributes paid to volunteers
Mr Morrison also paid tribute to Geoffrey Keaton, 32, and Andrew O'Dwyer, 36, the two firefighters killed in New South Wales on Thursday.

"When our volunteers go out there, they do it for so many reasons - but I can't help thinking they do it for love of family. Family is community, and they were out there defending their communities on that fateful night," he said.

The two men died when their truck was hit by a falling tree near a fire front, causing it to roll off the road.

Three other firefighters who were also in the vehicle survived with minor injuries.

What's happening with the fires?
Conditions eased on Sunday, giving exhausted firefighters a better shot at containing huge fires near Sydney.

Rain is forecast in some fire-struck parts of New South Wales on Tuesday and Wednesday - but another period of dangerously hot weather is expected next week.

Rising temperatures and strong winds had fanned fires in three states on Saturday.

In South Australia one person was found dead, another was critically injured and 15 homes were destroyed about 40km (25 miles) east of the state capital, Adelaide.

NSW fire chief Shane Fitzsimmons described Saturday as an "awful day".

One man was reported missing in the Blue Mountains west of Sydney, but ultimately found safe and well, the New South Wales Rural Fire Service tweeted.

In Victoria, authorities said 142 fires had started in the state since Friday. One of these was burning at an emergency level by Saturday afternoon.

What is driving the fires?
A combination of temperatures above 40C, low humidity and strong winds have worsened the struggle for the 3,000 emergency personnel mobilised to deal with the bushfires in NSW.

"We are in a period of unbelievable drought and some areas haven't seen rain for more than 12 months", NSW Rural Fire Services Inspector Ben Shepherd told the BBC.

"These fires are likely to continue to spread well past Christmas", he added.

Some of the fires in NSW were generating their own thunderstorms, the Rural Fire Service said.

"We will not get on top of these fires until we get some decent rain - we have said that for weeks and months," Mr Fitzsimmons said.

However, weather officials say no major rainfall is expected in the next two months.

A visual guide to the bushfires and extreme heat
The Gospers Mountain mega fire has destroyed about 460,000 hectares (1.14 million acres) north-west of Sydney and fire officials said there was a risk it could merge with the Grose Valley fire in the Blue Mountains.

CHICAGO - Two gang members who were convicted in the 2015 execution-style revenge killing of a 9-year-old boy were sentenced to a combined 155 years in prison Wednesday.
UFA700
Dwright Boone-Doty, 25, and Corey Morgan, 31, were found guilty of first-degree murder by two separate juries in October for the slaying of Tyshawn Lee, the young son of a rival gang member whom the duo deliberately hunted down.
เว็บพนันบอลดีที่สุดpantip
Boone-Doty, who was the gunman, was sentenced to 90 years in prison and Morgan, who hatched the revenge plot to kill the fourth grader, received 65 years behind bars.

"Where does this stop? Where does this mind-numbing, senseless violence stop? It stops with grandmas, mamas and innocent children trying to play at a public park," Judge Thaddeus L. Wilson said as he handed down the sentence, according to the Chicago Sun-Times. "Grandmas, mamas, kids and all are not fair game, and they matter to us."
ข่าวบอลวันนี้
Prosecutors read aloud a victim statement written by Tyshawn's grandmother and great-grandmother in court as the two women wiped away tears, according to the newspaper.

"All Tyshawn wanted was to grow up and be loved. You murderers took that from him," the statement read. "The words 'in cold blood' does not do justice."

However, defense attorneys tried to shift the focus to the childhood of the two convicted men to extract leniency, the newspaper reported.

The sister of Boone-Doty described him as a "troubled" yet "helpful, protective brother" who came from an "impoverished childhood." He was like Tyshawn and loved basketball but turned to the streets after his grandfather, who raised him, passed away.

Morgan also had a difficult past, his attorneys said. While he was raised by a loving mother, his father was a crack addict who once stole his Christmas presents from under the tree.

A Philippines court has found the masterminds of the country's worst political massacre guilty of murder.

In 2009, 58 people - 32 of them journalists - were killed when their convoy was attacked in the southern province of Maguindanao.
แทงบอล2020
Five members of the clan, including brothers Andal Ampatuan Jr and Zaldy Ampatuan, were sentenced to life in prison. A third brother was acquitted.

The case was seen as a test of the integrity of the justice system.

It comes amid claims by rights groups that impunity for powerful politicians is on the rise in the country, says the BBC's Howard Johnson in Manila.

Three other members of the clan - Anwar Ampatuan Sr, Anwar Ampatuan Jr, and Anwar Sajid Ampatuan were also found guilty.

The Ampatuans deny all charges and said they would appeal against the verdict.

Other suspects, who were ordered by the Ampatuan family to carry out the killings, received sentences of between six to 10 years in prison.

About 80 other suspects remain at large, including police officers and Ampatuan clan members.
การพนัน
Many accused police officers were acquitted.

What happened in Maguindanao?
The restive province of Maguindanao had for years been governed by the Ampatuan family, who occupied almost all the political posts in the area.

But in the elections for provincial governor, a rival from another influential clan emerged - Esmael Mangudadatu.

On Nov 23 in 2009, a convoy of vehicles carrying the wife, sisters and other female relatives of Mr Mangudadatu set out to register their candidate for the poll.

A group of 32 journalists and media workers were also there to capture the event - a total of 58 people were present.

Their convoy was kidnapped by henchmen allegedly sent by members of the Ampatuan clan, who ordered them brought to a hilltop and shot.

Their bodies were found in a mass grave.

"My wife was shot 17 times. They shot her breasts, her private part. I cannot just forget that," said Mr Mangudadatu, who went on to be elected the governor of Maguindanao.

Rights group Amnesty International called Thursday's verdict a "critical step towards justice".

However, it said the "search for justice is far from over" and called for the

Today's guilty verdicts were a hammer-blow to what rights groups say is a culture of rising impunity that has enabled some Philippine politicians to literally get away with murder.

A Human Rights Watch study of the Ampatuan clan in 2010, said they were considered "warlords" in the Maguindanao province.

The word of the clan was the law. "Either you said 'yes' to [them], or you got yourself killed," alleged a then-Ampatuan militia member.

While covering elections here, I've been warned to watch out for "hotspots" - local parlance for an area where the political rivalry is so fierce, threats can turn to violent acts.

President Duterte's spokesperson, Salvador Panelo, welcomed today's verdict - saying it was in keeping with the government's efforts to protect the media from "violence, threat and intimidation".

But Mr Duterte hasn't had always had such a rosy relationship with the press.

"Just because you're a journalist," he said in 2016, "you are not exempted from assassination if you're a son of a ****."

The victims were mainly female relatives of Mr Mangudadatu and journalists who had been covering the story.

No male relatives of Mr Mangudadatu went with them, as they feared they would come under attack. Mr Mangudadatu said he did not think women would be attacked.

The Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) described the killing as the single deadliest event for journalists in history. And today, journalists in the Philippines are not entirely safe.

According to the CPJ, it still remains the 10th most dangerous country to be a journalist, with some facing "online abuse and personal attacks" for their critical reporting of the government.

Why has the case taken so long to resolve?
It's been 10 years since the massacre happened and Thursday's trial saw verdicts on more than 100 suspects including members of the Ampatuan clan.

Around 80 suspects are still at large. At least four witnesses have been killed before they could testify, according to media reports.

"Observers have argued [that] the power of the Ampatuan family and its extensive network of allies and contacts in itself constitutes a threat to the proceedings," the International Press Institute (IPI) said.

According to the IPI, a court interpreter quit after he was allegedly threatened by the Ampatuans.

Several family members of the deceased have also reportedly said that the defence offered them money to withdraw from the case.

General Discussion / How the scramble for sand is destroying the Mekong
« on: December 19, 2019, 01:42:52 am »
A crisis is engulfing the Mekong River, its banks are collapsing and half a million people are at risk of losing their homes.

The entire ecosystem of this South East Asian river is under threat, all because of the world's insatiable demand for sand.
แทงบอล2020
Extracted from the bed of this giant river in Cambodia and Vietnam, sand is one of the Earth's most sought-after resources. Up to 50 billion tonnes are dredged globally every year - the largest extractive industry on the planet.
สมัครแทงบอลออนไลน์
"Extraction is happening at absolutely astronomical rates, we're having an industrial-scale transformation of the shape of the planet," says river scientist Prof Stephen Darby at Southampton University.
คาสิโนออนไลน์
His studies on the lower Mekong show its bed has been lowered by several metres in just a few years, over many hundreds of kilometres, all in the quest for sand.
การพนัน

From highways to hospitals, sand is the essential component for industries as varied as cosmetics, fertilisers and steel production - and particularly for cement.

China consumed more sand between 2011 and 2013 than the US did in all of the 20th Century, as it urbanised its rural areas.

Sand is also used to bulk up landmass - Singapore is 20% bigger now than it was at the time of independence in 1965.

"Every year we extract enough sand to build a wall 35m (114ft) high and 35m wide, all the way around the world," says Pascal Peduzzi of the United Nations Environment Programme.

Not any old sand will do. Desert sand is too smooth and fine to make concrete. Nor is it the kind that is needed to make glass or be used in the electronic industry.

So that is why sand is sought from ancient deposits in quarries - static extraction - or through so-called dynamic extraction from the sea and rivers like the Mekong.

Mr Peduzzi says dynamic extraction can be particularly damaging: "The sand is part of the ecosystem and plays a vital role, which if lost effects biodiversity, erosion and increases salinisation."

According to conservation charity WWF and the Mekong River Commission, the bed of the two main channels of Mekong Delta lost 1.4m in elevation in the 10 years to 2008, and between two and three metres have been lost in elevation since 1990.

Research in Nature, published last month, says that the sand mining on one 20km (12.5 mile) stretch of the river is "non-sustainable" as it cannot be replaced fast enough by natural sediment from the river's upper reaches.

It just not just a threat to the humans. The Mekong supports the world's largest inland fishery, providing a food source for the 60 million people living in the catchment area. The WWF reckons 800 species of fish and one of the largest remaining populations of the endangered Irrawaddy dolphin, live there.

The Mekong is not the only place where the grab for sand is creating controversy. In Kenya and India for example, there have been violent clashes over the resource, which is consumed at a rate of 18kg for every person on the planet each day.

So is the world running out of sand? Mark Russell, director of the UK Mineral Products Association, says it is not so much about running out, but reliance on harder to find sand.

"While this is a global issue it is playing out at a local scale, it is a resource no one really thinks about," he says.

One way to tackle the issue is by looking at ways to use the world's abundant desert sand. Scientists from Imperial College London have taken smooth desert sand and developed a building material which they have called "Finite". It has the same strength as residential concrete, with half the carbon footprint, and unlike concrete it is biodegradable.

Jeremy Corbyn has apologised to Labour supporters over his party's heavy defeat in the general election.

Writing in the Sunday Mirror and the Observer, he acknowledged the party's failings in the poll and said he accepted his responsibility for it.
แทงบอล2020
It comes as two likely leadership candidates - Lisa Nandy and Jess Phillips - have set out their stalls ahead of the race to succeed Mr Corbyn.

Boris Johnson will unveil his Queen's Speech on Thursday.
สมัครแทงบอลออนไลน์
It will include a commitment to enshrine increases in spending on the NHS in England in legislation.

But cabinet minister Michael Gove would not say when the government's Withdrawal Agreement Bill would return to Parliament, telling Sky's Sophie Ridge it would be a "top priority".

Mr Johnson won a Commons majority of 80 in Thursday's general election, his party's biggest election win for 30 years, sweeping aside Labour in its traditional heartlands.

In contrast, Labour suffered its worst election result since 1935 and saw its vote share fall by 8 points.
การพนัน
In his open letter to the Mirror on Sunday, Mr Corbyn said: "I will make no bones about it. The result was a body blow for everyone who so desperately needs real change in our country.

"I'm sorry that we came up short and I take my responsibility for it."

But Mr Corbyn insisted he remained "proud" of the party's campaign, and that it had offered a message of "hope" in the election.

The Labour leader - who is expected to stand down early next year - added that the party is determined to regain the trust of lifelong Labour voters who had abandoned it.

Labour's "red wall" across the Midlands and the north of England - the bedrock of the party's support for generations - crumbled as the Conservatives claimed key marginal seats on Thursday night and into Friday.

Mr Johnson went to former prime minister Tony Blair's old seat of Sedgefield on Saturday to thank voters in the north of England for "breaking the voting habits of generations" to back the Conservatives.

In a speech, he acknowledged "how difficult" that decision could be and said the Conservatives would repay people's trust.

Writing in the Observer, Mr Corbyn said his own election campaign had successfully re-set the terms of debate and his manifesto would be seen as "historically important".

"I am proud that on austerity, on corporate power, on inequality and on the climate emergency we have won the arguments and rewritten the terms of political debate," he said.

However, he said there was "no quick fix to overcome the distrust of many voters".

Among the potential candidates to take over the Labour party leadership are Birmingham Yardley MP Ms Phillips and Wigan MP Ms Nandy.

In the Observer, Ms Phillips appeals to people to join Labour to change it, and argues that too many working-class people do not believe Labour is better than the Tories.

While Ms Nandy has said the party has lost touch with the day-to-day lives of the people it wishes to represent.

There will be initial discussions next week on drawing up a timetable for electing a new Labour leader.

The party's ruling national executive is likely to take the final decision at a special meeting in early January.

Following the Conservatives' election win, MPs will return to Westminster on Tuesday and begin the process of swearing in, before the Queen formally opens Parliament on Thursday.

Mr Johnson's Queen's Speech will include a commitment by the party to put its NHS spending plan into law as a symbol of commitment to the health service.

The Tories have said that NHS spending will reach £33.9bn each year by 2023/4.

New Zealand police have said they plan to recover bodies from White Island - where a volcanic eruption killed at least eight people - on Friday morning.
เว็บพนันบอลดีที่สุด2020
The rescue mission will go ahead despite the risk of another eruption, police said.

At least eight people are thought to be on the island following the eruption on Monday. All are presumed dead.

Police said they were planning a "high-speed recovery" of the bodies.
UFA700
Eight others have already been confirmed dead, and 20 are in intensive care after suffering severe burns when the volcano erupted as tourists were visiting.

GeoNet, New Zealand's geological hazard information site, said on Thursday there was a 50-60% chance of another eruption within the next 24 hours.

The site's estimates have over the past days shown a steady increase in the risk of a new eruption.

But families of the victims are growing increasingly "desperate" for the bodies to be recovered.

"We are now living with a growing sense of desperation to bring home those that we know are there and those we love," Whakatane Mayor Judy Turner told reporters.
W88
"The frustration of those families most affected is completely understandable."

What's the recovery plan?

In a press conference on Thursday, Deputy Police Commissioner Mike Clement said authorities have agreed a recovery plan even though the risk that the volcano will erupt had not diminished.

"Let there be no mistake," he said." This is not a zero risk operation."

He explained police expected the situation on the island to remain unchanged overnight.

Eight specialists from the New Zealand Defence Force will in the morning go to the island and they "will make every effort to recover all bodies from the island".

Surveillance flights have allowed police to only locate six bodies so far, he explained. The location of the other two bodies is unknown and "there will be limited opportunities" to find those.

"We will play things by ear, literally, we will make calls as the morning goes by."

The deputy commissioner said his biggest concern was the unpredictable volcano, followed by the weather, the direction of the wind and the state of the sea.

"A lot of things have to go right for this to work."

Elon Musk did not defame a British caver who helped in last year's rescue of trapped Thai schoolboys by calling him a "pedo guy", a US jury has found.

A public row broke out between the two men over the rescue of 12 boys trapped in a Thai cave in June 2018.

Mr Musk told the court this week the phrase "pedo guy" was common in South Africa, where he grew up.

Speaking to reporters outside the courtroom after the jury reached its decision, Mr Musk said: "My faith in humanity is restored."

Mr Unsworth's lawyer Lin Wood said their side would leave the court "with our heads held high" but that the decision was "not a good verdict for society".

"This verdict sends a signal, and one signal only - that you can make any accusation you want to, as vile as it may be and as untrue as it may be, and somebody can get away with it," he said.

The case had been closely watched as it was seen as testing the legal threshold in the US for defamatory material on social media.

Appearing dejected, Mr Unsworth himself added: "I respect the jury's decision. I'd just like to say my legal team have been absolutely awesome. I came here for a verdict, unfortunately it's not gone the way I expected but I respect the jury's decision and thank them for that."

Jurors took less than an hour to return their unanimous verdict, following a four-day trial at a federal court in Los Angeles.

Jury foreman Joshua Jones said Mr Unsworth's legal team were unable to prove their case and should have focused more on the evidence.

"I think they tried to get our emotions involved in it," he was quoted as saying by the Associated Press news agency.

What was the row about?
Mr Unsworth, an experienced 64-year-old cave explorer, splits his time between the UK and Thailand.

During the rescue of the young football team, which captured the world's attention, Mr Unsworth helped recruit expert cave divers who were instrumental in freeing the boys safely.

Mr Musk sent Tesla engineers and a small submarine to northern Thailand to help with the rescue effort, but the vessel was never used.

Instead, he and Mr Unsworth got into a public war of words after the diver branded the offer of help a "PR stunt".

During an interview with CNN, the diver suggested the billionaire "stick his submarine where it hurts".

Mr Musk, who now has nearly 30 million followers, responded with a series of tweets about Mr Unsworth - including the one calling him "pedo guy". It was later deleted.

What else was said at court?
Testifying over two days on Tuesday and Wednesday, Mr Musk told the court he did not expect the "pedo" tweet to be taken literally.

He said that at the time he thought Mr Unsworth was "just some random creepy guy" who was "unrelated to the rescue".

Mr Musk apologised on Twitter and in court for his outburst.

Contesting this, Mr Wood cited another now-deleted tweet the billionaire sent to his followers saying: "Bet ya a signed dollar it's true."

He also cited an email exchange that Mr Musk had with a Buzzfeed reporter who contacted him for comment on the threat of legal action, where the entrepreneur said: "Stop defending child rapists."

Mr Wood said Mr Musk was a "billionaire bully" who had "dropped a nuclear bomb" on his client, and that the tweet had affected his career and relationships.
